The A.L. Mailman Family Foundation was established in 1980. The Foundation is one of two successor foundations to the Mailman Foundation, established in 1943 by brothers Abraham and Joseph Mailman with assets garnered from their work as entrepreneurs and financiers. The brothers’ community spirit and love of children were reflected in substantial donations, including gifts to The Mailman Child Development Center at the University of Miami and The Mailman Family Center at Nova University. Shortly before Abe Mailman’s death in 1980, the brothers divided their assets so that each immediate family could establish its own philanthropic traditions.

Abe Mailman’s daughter, Dr. Marilyn (Mickey) Segal, professor of early child development and pioneering parent educator, inspired the Foundation’s focus on early childhood and its commitment to engaging families and communities

in providing every child with the foundation for emotional-well being, social responsibility, and life success. Her passionate belief in the ability of all parents, given the necessary supports, to be effective nurturers of their children, remains the driving force behind all our work.

As a family and as a Foundation, we work together to implement Abe Mailman’s belief that “the best is yet to be” and his daughter’s conviction that, by starting with young children, we can bring forth the best.
